Leadership and Management Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Leadership and Management - Term Paper Example On the other hand, the essence of leadership is toà  bringà  a change in peoplesââ¬â¢ lives. Leaders might not have anyà  formalà  authorityà  to do yet they maintain cordialà  relationships withà  peopleà  and give credit where it is due. By doing this, they acquire a referent power (McConnell). Although, they areà  goodà  with people, they have toà  maintainà  their remoteness to keep theà  charismaà  ofà  leadershipà  alive.à  This somehow makes their work easy because remoteness gives themà  opportunityà  to ponder upon things, andà  comeà  up withà  greatà  ideas that encourage people to accomplish their tasks.à  A leader has anà  immenseà  impact on anà  organizationà  because he is theà  one who motivates people toà  work, encourages them toà  doà  better than before, makes them look at the positive sides of things and indirectly contributes in the productivity of an organization. Steve Jobs comes to mind when one thinks ofà  leadershipà  t hat took an organization to soaring heights of success.à  Hisà  leadershipà  proved exemplary when he was fired from theà  company that he foundedà  and instead of complaining about his loss, he started ââ¬ËNextââ¬â¢ which Apple Computers Inc.à  ultimatelyà  acquired.à  Hisà  perseveranceà  and innovation makes him aà  phenomenalà  leaderà  and hisà  companyà  an epitome of perfection. Anotherà  greatà  leader who had aà  vision, who believed that failures give us an opportunity to learn, who said whenà  youà  strive for something big, there are people who willà  ridiculeà  and try toà  tearà  dreamsà  apart, but audacityà  willà  decideà  how long will oneà  go is none other than Bill Gates. An important mantra of Bill Gates is that success must never reach the head. No matter how highà  youà  go, there is alwaysà  chanceà  to learn more.à  Bill Gatesà  showedà  aà  newà  aspectà  ofà  leadershipà  that it is not necessary to lead, mot ivate and guide others but firstà  leadà  yourself, make yourself capable enough to make othersà  followà  youà  voluntarily. People oftenà  considerà  management andà  leadershipà  asà  same, but a few differences separate the two. Aà  managerà  typically takes care of what one is doing, whereas a leader motivates one toà  doà  somethingà  newà  (Linda K. Stroh, Neale and Langlands). Aà  managerà  seeks short-term objectives, whereas aà  leaderà  has long-term vision in his mind. A manager makes an employee do things where as a leader guides him toà  achieveà  it.à  Aà  managerââ¬â¢sà  concernà  is to be right whereas, a leader tries toà  knowà  what isà  right.à  For example, the military has to manage its assetsà  wellà  to exploit itsà  efficiencyà  however, at the time of war, theà  militaryââ¬â¢s significantà  dutyà  is to win the war regardless of assets required.à  At that moment,à  only aà  goodà  leader canà  mouldà  the sit uation in his favor and achieve victory.à  Managementà  will notà  workà  here because it usesà  long processes and analyses to reach a decision. Manger gives people money toà  work,à  on the other hand,à  aà  leaderà  gives themà  excitementà  and support.à  Aà  managerà  will only try to find out solutions whenever he confronts a problem but, a leader will try toà  hearà  theà  noiseà  behind silence andà  createà  questions toà  identifyà  the cause of the problem. I disagree with the idea that all managers are leaders because
